Marathon Public Library – Summer Programmer

 Job objectives

The Summer Programmer will play an essential role in supporting the Marathon Public Library’s programming by assisting with the planning, preparation, and delivery of a wide range of summer activities. The student will help lead children’s and youth programs, including storytimes, craft sessions, outdoor pop-ups, and learning-based events, while ensuring all program areas are set up with the necessary materials and remain welcoming and accessible.

They will engage directly with community members by greeting participants, answering questions, encouraging involvement in reading challenges, and supporting families throughout the program. The student will also contribute to culturally focused activities by helping coordinate Indigenous storytelling sessions, cultural workshops, and heritage displays that highlight the diversity of the local community.

In addition to program delivery, the student will support literacy initiatives by preparing reading materials, helping patrons select books, and assisting with educational kits and activity sheets. They will help create promotional materials such as posters and social media content and may assist with photography to document program highlights. The role also includes basic administrative duties such as maintaining attendance records, tracking supplies, organizing program spaces, and providing general library support, including shelving books and assisting patrons with basic technology needs.

Throughout the summer, the student will follow library policies and safety procedures, contribute to an inclusive and positive environment, and demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and enthusiasm. Their work will help the library deliver a vibrant, community-building summer program while gaining valuable experience in public service, program facilitation, and cultural engagement.

  • High level of communication skills
  • Experience working with people of diverse background, children, adults, seniors and people with disabilities

Applicants must be eligible under Canada Summer Jobs:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
